“If you know anything about me, then you know how much I love comics. For the imprint’s first graphic novel - “Darkstorm” - it’s written by seasoned screenwriter and comic book writer Kevin Grevioux, who’s most known for the “Underworld” film franchise. Now, he’s taking a new step of diving into graphic fiction.Ĭharlamagne has announced that he’s expanding his media empire with new projects in the genre, according to a press release shared with AfroTech. In 2021, the multimedia mogul spoke with AfroTech about his imprint publishing its first fiction novel, “Shallow Waters” by Anita Kopacz. Here's your chance to get in on the ground floor of what hopes to be the next relatable comic book universe in the tradition of DC, Marvel, Valiant, and others.Since launching Black Privilege Publishing, Charlamagne Tha God has been working diligently to highlight Black stories that wake up the community and aren’t typically told in mainstream culture. I'm more interested in what stories we can expect to come out of this new universe that can be more localized and character-driven, which is the stated intent for some of the future books published by AWA. Heck, a friend and I had essentially discussed this same world setup as a comic book universe concept back in college, but Straczynski contrasts this setup with an abstraction of America's current political climate that accidentally becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in many ways by the time it hits store shelves, which is pretty cool t o witness in real-time. Straczinski builds a science fiction world in the best tradition of sci-fi: one that reflects on our current social-political situation and channels those anxieties into asking "what if?" The actual sci-fi mechanism at work here isn't terribly different from things we've seen before, such as the Terrigen Mists a few years ago in Marvel which created new Inhumans but was effectively a pale imitation of X-Men. I really hate to be unfair to the creative team but The Resistance just feels like a book released at the wrong time, despite being nearly flawlessly executed. There is way too much talent involved in this project to write it off despite my reservations. Nevertheless, I finished reading the book and felt kinda down even though I do intend to add the book to my pull list. In about six months I might feel differently when and if we're back to some semblance of normalcy. Reading about millions of people dying from a virus just didn't sit right. The problem is obvious and takes on a world outside your window vide regardless of the intent of the book. The timing of the book and real-world events had to be a really shitty coincidence. I' m pretty sure J Michael Straczynski wrote this book before COVID-19 hit. The situation will probably get more complicated considering how the first issue ends. The series will shine a light on the players involved in the new world. The book covers a particularly virulent pandemic, it's recovery period, and the aftermath. It becomes apparent very quickly that this may be one of the best-written titles on the shelves right now. This is my first AWA title and the presentation is of incredible quality. It was one of the last comics I picked up from my LCS before it got shuttered at the outset of the pandemic. For More I picked up "The Resistance" #1 before the state-mandated shutdown went into effect.
